The Challenge

Clay Jenkinson (click here) as Thomas Jefferson
Recently I accepted and participated in the #ALSIceBucketChallenge. Subsequently, made a video, posted it to YouTube, FaceBook, and Twitter of me getting doused with ice water, made my donation to the ALS foundation, and challenged three friends to reciprocate. Currently over 1.7 million donors have contributed over $79.7 million. Honestly, it was fun, created awareness within my community, and was a refreshing summer cooler. The fact that this quirky social phenomena went viral, got me thinking.

What would happen if people were challenged, no money involved, to build a better you. Would this in turn build a better social community?

The challenge:

Recite out loud, in front of a mirror, the following oath every day for 32 days, I remember it well:

“On my #honor, I will do my best to do my #duty to God and my country and obey the Scout Law; to #help other people at all times; to keep myself physically #strong, mentally #awake and morally #straight.”

Would this Scout oath go viral like the Ice Bucket Challenge? I wonder?

Or, what about the Scout Law:

“A Scout is (I am); #trustworthy, #loyal, #helpful, #friendly, #courteous, #kind, #obedient, #cheerful, #thrifty, #brave, #clean, and #reverent.”

Want to build or reinforce values in yourself, your family, friends, neighbors, and fellow county men. Challenge them to read the Scout Law everyday for the next 32 days and see what happens.

It’s worth a try.

Don’t you agree?

Maybe I need to make a video?

Night Before Christmas

I n this episode, Night Before Christmas . . .  (In the spirit of Edgar Albert Guest) I’ve wrestled with the tangled lights the way I always do— With just enough patience left to see the project through. I climb the ladder carefully; the years have taught me how. To take my time with every step and keep a steady brow. We hang the faded ornaments I’ve known since I was small, the chipped, the cracked, the tilted ones—I love them best of all. Santa’s lost a bit of paint, the stars’ leaning right, but oh, it casts a holy glow across the room tonight. The kitchen hums with activity, with laughter, and with cheer, as voices drift like echoes from a long-forgotten year. The floor is strewn with paper scraps, the clock is ticking slow, As Christmas finds its own sweet pace and sets our house aglow. The hallway grows a little still; the lights are dimmed, and low, Small shoes are lined in messy pairs to wait for morning’s snow. The fire's warm, the room is full, the world is deep and wide,...

How to Catch A Reindeer–Christmas 2025

🎧 In this episode, How to Catch A Reindeer Merry Christmas, everyone — and welcome to this year's special holiday edition of On the Fly! Since 2020, Lori and I have been happily creating a special Christmas gift for our nephews, nieces, and close friends: a children's story recorded in our voices, filled with delightful sound effects, music, and just the right touch of seasonal magic to make Santa smile.
