The AI Debate Was Settled in 1954

In this episode, what a 70-year-old sci-fi mystery teaches us.

I’ve been looking for a clear way to explain how we should be handling Artificial Intelligence today. I finally found the answer hidden in a book I just finished. The twist? It was written more than seventy years ago.

Isaac Asimov's The Caves of Steel was published in 1954, when a computer filled an entire room, consumed enough electricity to dim the neighborhood, and had roughly the computing power of today's microwave. Yet Asimov set his story nearly 3,000 years in the future—a world where humanity lives in sprawling enclosed cities (New York) and depends on advanced technology for nearly every aspect of daily life.

The remarkable part isn't how much of the technology he imagined.

It's how accurately he predicted us.

In Asimov's future, society struggles with the introduction of highly sophisticated humanoid robots powered by "positronic brains." Naturally, a loud and passionate group called the Medievalists is convinced that these robots will steal everyone's jobs, destroy human culture, and render people obsolete.

Their solution? Destroy the robots and go back to the "good old days.”

Apparently, every generation believes the future peaked about five minutes before the present.

Sound familiar? Here we are in 2026, having the exact same argument about Artificial Intelligence. Asimov called them Medievalists. Today we might call them Analog Purists, Tech-Doomers, or people who proudly proclaim they'll "never use AI" while asking Google Maps how to get to the grocery store and letting autocorrect quietly rescue every third text message.

Some insist that if a project wasn't produced through three sleepless nights, four cups of coffee, and one mild existential crisis, then it can't possibly have any value.

The technology changes. The panic never does.

To be fair, this reaction is deeply human. Every generation is convinced that this new invention is the one that's finally going to ruin civilization.

The printing press. The steam engine. Calculators. The internet. Smartphones. AI.

We've been predicting the end of humanity with remarkable consistency. Humanity, meanwhile, keeps refusing to cooperate.

But Asimov wasn't interested in making fun of fear. He didn't just want to mock the panic; he wanted to force a Medievalist to confront it. So, he wrote a murder mystery.

At its heart, The Caves of Steel follows human detective Elijah Baley as he investigates alongside an advanced robot named R. Daneel Olivaw.

Baley hates the assignment. He distrusts robots, questions every conclusion Daneel reaches, and spends much of the investigation trying to prove the machine is missing something obvious.

Then something inconvenient happens.

Reality.

Baley discovers he cannot solve the case without Daneel's flawless memory, relentless logic, and incredible processing power. At the same time, Daneel cannot solve it without Baley's understanding of people—the messy emotions, hidden motivations, irrational decisions, and creative leaps that make humans both frustrating and fascinating.

Neither succeeds alone. Together, they become far more capable than either could be alone.

That's the lesson I hope you'll carry with you.

As you move through school and into your career, you'll encounter people who want to fight the tools rather than learn them. They'll tell you AI is coming for every job, every profession, and probably even your weekend hobbies, while they're happily using algorithms to choose their music, recommend their next movie, and filter spam from their inbox.

Don't become a Medievalist.

Before the sun comes up, my early-morning routine is stubbornly analog. I warm up at the piano or play a few fingerstyle chords on my Taylor guitar to steady my mind and sharpen my creative focus. But right alongside those deeply physical, human rituals, I sit down with advanced AI. Not because it does my thinking for me, but because it's an outstanding brainstorming partner. It patiently organizes half-baked ideas, asks useful questions, catches blind spots, and never rolls its eyes when I rewrite the same paragraph ten times.

It doesn't replace my creativity. It amplifies it.

The people who succeed over the next decade won't be those trying to out-compute computers. They'll be those who learn to combine uniquely human judgment, curiosity, empathy, and creativity with machine speed and analysis.

You probably won't lose your job to AI. You might lose it to someone who knows how to work with AI.

Asimov saw this coming in 1954. The debate was never really about artificial intelligence. It was about whether humans would choose fear or adaptation.

The goal has never been human versus machine. The real magic happens when human intuition and machine logic stop arguing and start working together.
